This weekend, I attended the New York Times Travel Show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in new York, where my Travel section colleagues and I spoke on a panel called “How to Get the Most Out of your Travels in 2011.” that was the boring part. (I mean for me – not for the audience, let’s hope.)

The cool part was seeing all of the people from the travel industry together in one place; it was as if my Twitter feed had come to life. I popped in and out of presentations by all-stars like Arthur and Pauline Frommer and then roamed the booths where representatives of tourist boards and tour companies painted gauzy images of how perfect your next vacation would be if you only you came to Newfoundland. or Uganda. or Disney.

The vast hall was split into geographic areas, and then into countries or regions, the Africans had native fabrics and photos of giraffes out in force; the Caribbean always had a musical performance going on and plenty of beach imagery; and the American and Canadian stands were a bit more reserved but no less colorful. Potential customers wandered throughout, looking for deals, entering contests, and most of all, sniffing out any and all free samples.

I have little patience for this pamphlet-and-pitch approach, so I just asked all of them for a concrete way I could save money in their destination. (And tried to stuff my face with as much free food as possible.) it worked.

Florida I got the same tips from the Orlando representative,  Denise Spiegel, and Lauren Tjaden of VisitFlorida.com: not nearly enough people take advantage of Florida’s various free discount programs. for Orlando, it’s the Magicard, and in the Keys, it’s the Keys Kash program. These sorts of cards are often useless, but I was impressed by these two. The Magicard gives users a 15 percent discount off Amtrak fare to Orlando, 50 percent off a minimum three-night stay at the best Western, two-for-one ballet tickets and plenty more; and the Keys Kash card offers a free piece of Key lime pie at Abbondanza restaurant in Key West (and over a hundred other deals, like $100 off boat charters, but the pie alone was enough to convince me).

New Hampshire I was drawn to Jim Alden, though not because of his personality. he was standing next to glass jars of old-fashioned candy – some of the more than 300 pounds that he had brought down from his Guinness record-holding candy store, Chutters in Littleton, N.H. his advice on a great deal in Littleton? Have the hash. he was referring to the corned beef hash at the Littleton Diner, which goes for $4.95 and he notes is “hearty, sinewy, tasty chew, mixed  with onions, potatoes and fresh parsley.” The booth’s all–you-can-eat free candy, along with a furry life-size moose, easily gave new Hampshire the title for best booth amenities. Yes, Puerto Rico, your salsa dancers were good, but not free-candy-and-moose-good.

Texas The soft-spoken Texan (or possibly guy from  the Bronx doing a great fake accent) representing that state’s tourism industry told me that anyone planning a multiple-city Texas trip should check out airfares of neighboring cities to see where to start and end a tour. he lives between San Antonio and Austin, and often finds up to a $100 difference depending on which airport he flies to. (Online checks show he’s right – for several dates I checked, San Antonio was about $65 cheaper than Austin, just 80 miles away.)International

Macau Free buses and cheap pandas! These came from João Rodrigues, representing the Macau Government Tourist Office. he noted that when you take the ferry there from Hong Kong, there’s no need to pay for a taxi. Simply figure out which hotels are near where you’re going (for downtown the Wynn, Lisboa, Grand Lisboa and MGM all work), and take a free hotel shuttle there. also, the Macau Giant Panda Pavilion is now open! Children younger than 13 and seniors are free, and those 13 to 64 pay 10 patacas, or $1.27.  That’s not only a great deal, it’s an excuse to mention the awesome fact that Macao’s currency is called the pataca.

Uganda Sub-Saharan Africa is expensive to get to, so it was nice to have Pearl Hoareau of the Uganda Travel Bureau tour company tell me how to save money and still see the country’s mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The gorilla fee and tour is $500, an unavoidable fee, but Ms. Hoareau undercut her own business by telling me you don’t need to take a tour to get there. instead, save money taking the public bus there from Kampala (about $10) and eat motooke, mashed green bananas with peanut sauce served at informal restaurants called kafundas for $1.50 a meal.

Egypt New kinds of tourists are streaming to Egypt to see Tahrir Square, it seems. but tour operators want the old kind of pyramid-gazing, Nile-cruising tourist back too. Sunny Land Tours was hawking a new low price for its 10-day tour that includes a 7-day Nile cruise and all meals: $1,299 per person double-occupancy, including airfare out of new York. of course that’s not the real price – air taxes will add about $240 and optional tours and entrance fees to attractions are more. but it’s not bad.

Rome I love renting apartments instead of staying in hotels, but because I usually travel alone, I hadn’t thought of how much you can save by doing this if you’re traveling as a family or group. Isaac Vanaggelen at the RentalInRome.com booth showed me around their site, which lists apartments where a family of four can stay for less than 100 euros. he tells his friends to stay at the Vatican Recreation Apartments building, where a stay for two is as little as 60 euros a night. (Note: most online reviews of the site are good, but I can’t vouch personally.)

Ecuador in addition to serving strawberries dipped in Arriba chocolate, the representatives of the Ecuadorean Ministry of Tourism told me reluctantly that LAN, the South American carrier that recently began flying to the Galápagos, is offering cheaper-than-ever packages to what is usually an expensive destination. it has been offering a three-day, two-night package for $352 (per person, double occupancy), which does not include airfare.

Mexico The Mexico booth had all kinds of great deals. at least I assume they did. I fought the crowd for a free Herradura tequila shot, and then moved on.

Jamaica Air Jamaica had a booth set up, and their people told me they were offering $89 one-way ticket to Jamaica, with two free checked bags and a 10 percent discount for travelers  60 and over and children from 2 to 11. that $89 figure means nothing without knowing the taxes and availability, but I went online yesterday and found that I could be on a flight today for $303.07, round trip, with taxes. That’s about $70 cheaper than I could find on Kayak, and “cheaper than I could find on Kayak” is my gold standard for a bargain.

Through the show, I paid careful attention to what drew me and others to certain booths and not others. Free pens did not sway me. Candy did, although American Express’s mini York Peppermint Patties paled next to the Israeli booths with various brands of chocolate mysteriously labeled in Hebrew letters and new Hampshire’s jars of old-fashioned sweets and life-size moose toy. “Imagine if I brought that home to my nieces,” I heard one guy say. Florida was offering SPF15 lip balm, perfect for the cracked lips of new Yorkers nearing the end of a harsh winter.

But a couple booths were also betting on sex appeal.

Aruba had none other than pompommed New York Jets cheerleaders, whose tenuous connection was that they shot their calendar in Aruba this year. then there was the Air Jamaica booth, which featured Yendi Phillips, the 2010 miss Jamaica, their “brand ambassador.”

Professionals like me are, of course, immune to these sorts of ploys. sure, I stuck around and chatted with Ms. Phillips for a while, but it had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that she was first runner-up at the miss Universe pageant.

Really, it didn’t. it was because she was about to embark on a seriously cool vacation, hitting two of the world’s great carnivals in a single weekend: Trinidad (Saturday and Sunday) and Rio de Janeiro (Monday and Tuesday).

My travel writing mind raced – what if I went, and tacked on a late flight to new Orleans to arrive in time for the end of Mardi Gras? but it turns out that that plane fare, according to Kayak, would run me $3,797. no one in any booth anywhere in the world could make that affordable.

Where would you invest $1000 to earn the most interest?

When Barry Bonds walked into the federal courthouse in San Francisco on Dec. 4, 2003, his career total stood at 658 home runs, baseball had yet to institute drug testing with penalties and the Giants were nearly a half-century removed from their last World Series title.

Much has changed since the brawny, contentious slugger spent 2 hours, 53 minutes answering questions from a pair of assistant U.S. attorneys and grand jurors examining drug use in sports.

Baseball’s Steroids Era receded somewhat as players and owners started mandatory testing and then toughened the rules three times. Bonds won his seventh MVP award in 2004 and broke Hank Aaron’s career home run record in 2007.

And then on Nov. 15, 2007, exactly 50 days since he took his final big league swing and 100 after topping Aaron, Bonds was indicted on charges he lied to the grand jury when he denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs. Even though he wanted to continue playing, all 30 major league teams shunned him. and without Bonds, the Giants last year won their first title since 1954.

Starting Monday, a jury will be selected in the very same court house where Bonds testified all those years ago to determine whether he broke the law with four short answers totaling nine words: “Not that I know of,” ”No, no,” ”No,” and “Right.”

Each of the charges — four counts of making false statements to the grand jury and one count of obstruction — carry a possible sentence of up to 10 years, although federal guidelines make a total of 15 to 21 months more probable if Bonds is convicted.

Prosecutors claim he lied to protect the legacy of a career in which he hit home runs at an unprecedented pace, especially for someone his age. Bonds was 43 when he his 762nd, and last, home run.

His apparent defense?

He was truthful when told the grand jury he didn’t know the substances he used were steroids, so even if they were performance-enhancing drugs, that isn’t relevant to the charges against Bonds.

“If you look at the cases of athletes internationally over the years, the defenses of those athletes has been, ‘I didn’t know,’” said Dr. Gary Wadler, former chairman of the committee that determines the banned substances list for the World Anti-Doping Agency. “They clearly know. the question is: In a hearing, can you prove it? but they know. Of course, they know.”

Even if that is the case here, prosecutors may trouble convincing jurors.

Much of the government’s case has been gutted by the refusal of Greg Anderson to testify. Bonds’ personal trainer and childhood friend was sentenced in 2005 to three months in prison and three months home confinement after pleading guilty to steroid distribution and money laundering for his role in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO) case. He is likely to be jailed again next week because he is refusing to testify at Bonds’ trial.

Without Anderson to authenticate key evidence, U.S. District Judge Susan Illston ordered that prosecutors couldn’t present three positive drug tests seized from BALCO and so-called doping calendars maintained by the trainer at the trial. Prosecutors tried and failed to get her decision overturned. the appeal delayed the trial by two years, but the government lost in a 2-1 vote by a panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Prosecutors allege Bonds lied to the grand jury when he said he didn’t take steroids Anderson gave him, never received human growth hormone from Anderson, never took anything Anderson asked him to take before the 2003 season other than vitamins, and never allowed anyone to inject him other than physicians.

Bonds testified to the grand jury he was told by Anderson he was taking “flax seed oil,” which the government alleges was a then-undetectable steroid later determined to be Tetrahydrogestrinone (THG), developed by Patrick Arnold for BALCO and known as “the clear.” Bonds also testified he used a lotion that Anderson told him was a balm for pain relief, which the government claims was a testosterone-based substance known as “the cream.”

With Anderson refusing to testify, prosecutors intend to use the testimony of other athletes, including former AL MVP Jason Giambi, plus the a tape recording of Anderson speaking with then-Bonds assistant Steve Hoskins, to help prove their assertion that Bonds knew what he was taking.

A urine test Bonds took on June 4, 2003, for baseball, which later was found to be positive for THG, also will be introduced along with a July 7, 2006, urine test for baseball that was positive for an amphetamine. and Bonds’ former mistress, Kimberly Bell, will be asked to testify about changes to Bonds’ body and demeanor the government asserts were caused by steroids.

With the well-established group of BALCO prosecutors led by Matthew a. Parrella and Jeffrey D. Nedrow battling against Bonds’ high-priced legal team of half-a-dozen-plus attorneys, the case could come down to how much doubt Bonds’ side raises about the government’s evidence. the standard for criminal conviction is “beyond a reasonable doubt,” not “without any doubt.”

Thus far, the highest-profile athlete sent to prison in the BALCO investigation has been track star Marion Jones, sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to lying to federal investigators when she denied using performance-enhancing drugs and to a second count of lying about her association with a check-fraud scheme.

Led by Jeff Novitzky, the tall and imposing lead investigator, the government has been criticized by some for spending millions of dollars on the investigation of Bonds and the separate probe of cyclist Lance Armstrong, who has not been charged. and Novitzky and prosecutors were rebuffed by the 9th Circuit, which ruled they illegally seized the tests results of about 100 baseball players not involved in the BALCO case.

Yet former baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent sees value in the prosecution.

“The legal system has to count on people telling the truth and therefore the government will take seriously charges of lying to federal organizations,” he said. “It’s important for the federal system.”

Illston has urged the sides to try to reach an agreement without a trial, but that recommendation seems to have gone nowhere. and Bonds is only the first Steroids Era baseball star to face a jury. Starting July 6, seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens goes on trial in Washington on three counts of making false statements, two counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of Congress.

How Bonds and Clemens are viewed on the 2013 Hall of Fame ballot — and beyond — will be determined by these verdicts. Bonds’ season record of 73 home runs and his career mark have been dismissed by some, perhaps many. Now 46, Bonds’ statements, accomplishments, physique and reputation will be under scrutiny like never before.

“Obviously some of the romance and mythology of all sports has been diminished,” broadcaster Bob Costas said. “That’s just a consequence of the modern age. but I think that it’s mostly because of the direct linkage to steroids.”

How can I stay in my home?

This is a question commonly asked by today’s senior citizens.

Typically, people do not wish to spend the rest of their days in a nursing home or other restricted facility, even if 24-hour care is what is needed to keep a person healthy.

So, how does one pay for care?

Some people may have enough money to pay for their own care for the rest of their lives.

Unfortunately, not everyone does.

For those who do not, they still have to spend down the assets they do have until they reach the applicable asset limit for the Medicaid program that suits them.

One way or another, spending down at least some assets is usually necessary.

During this spend down, it is a good idea so as not to waste any time to get documentation in order so an application for Medicaid can be filed as soon as funds have reached the asset limit.

Quite often, an individual’s largest and most valuable asset is his home.

This is an asset that can also be used to help pay for care. if a person owns his home, he can continue to reside there, while using the equity in his home to pay for care.

Reverse mortgages are a very useful tool for senior citizens who wish to remain at home.

A reverse mortgage allows a person over the age of 62 to draw from the equity in the home to meet expenses.

A reverse mortgage can be an excellent tool for someone who will use the mortgage proceeds to pay for home care and stay at home longer.

The Department of Social Services (DSS), through its Medicaid programs, will cover only a certain number of hours per week, depending on the amount of care required.

After assets have been spent down to the asset limitations set by DSS, an individual may apply for assistance from a Medicaid program.

Since Medicaid will cover only a specific amount of hours, the proceeds from a reverse mortgage can be used to help a person make up the difference in hours of care by providing a source from which to draw funds and pay for that care.

Of course, when the person passes away or moves out of the home, the mortgage is due and payable.

Many seniors feel that they have spent their lives taking care of their homes, and now it is time for their home to take care of them.

Connecticut is among the minority of states that does not offer 24-hour, in-home care through its Medicaid programs.

Legislators are beginning to realize nursing home care is more costly and less desirable.

As long as an individual is residing in her home, the home is considered an exempt asset for Medicaid purposes.

This means the state cannot take away a home if the individual or her spouse lives in it, or if she has a blind or disabled child or a minor child living in it.

Just a few years ago, Connecticut introduced a program called “Money Follows the Person,” in which seniors who are residing in a nursing home and begin receiving Medicaid benefits can return home and receive 24-hour care at home.

This program was designed to assist those seniors who would have been able to return home, but did not have the resources to pay for 24-hour care.

They would otherwise be confined to a nursing home setting because Medicaid would not cover home care.

Under “Money Follows the Person,” they can return to their home or apartment and continue to receive care.

This, however, is currently the only program in Connecticut that provides 24-hour care at home and it requires the person reside in a nursing home for approximately six months before becoming eligible.

The legislature is considering a change to provide more programs to keep people at home.

Long-term care insurance

Most long-term care insurance policies offer an option for home care.

If someone has a long-term care insurance policy, it is important they understand exactly what is covered.

Once a person has reached his 60s, premiums tend to be high and sometimes even prohibitive. it is important for people to obtain a long-term care insurance policy in their 40s or 50s to avoid such high premiums.

In order to have the policy pay for care, a claim must be filed and the policyholder must meet certain medical criteria, including the need for assistance with a number of activities of daily living.

Each policy spells out exactly what its requirements are.

After a claim is filed against the policy, premiums cease and the policy begins to pay for care.

A policy may not cover the entire expense for home care, forcing the policyholder to make up the difference.

This is why it is important to understand the policy.

An individual may need to use his/her assets and/or take a reverse mortgage to help pay for care that the policy will not cover.

On the other hand, having a long-term care policy may help to keep someone at home longer, or even indefinitely.

While the thought of paying for long-term care at home can be a scary one, there are several options available.

Getting In

Go for the interview. Applicants have a lot of stresses to bear, and unfortunately, this is one they really can’t unload. While many business schools require applicant interviews, some, including the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, make them optional. but Dawna Clarke, Tuck’s director of admissions, says that in almost all cases, turning down the opportunity for an interview is a big mistake. "There are so many skills and attributes that might not come across on paper. Making an effort to go to a school to interview shows that you’re really interested in the school and lets you tell your story in a different way," she says.

Even if you have a tendency to bomb in interviews, it is probably worth the risk. "in my experience, people are more likely to leave a positive impression than a negative impression," Clarke says.

Ask Alumni

It also pays to be extra diligent in researching a potential school. Clarke suggests that applicants track down alumni and ask them everything they can about the school. "It allows you to convey a better sense of why you want to come to the school," she says. One way to find graduates: utilize the alumni network at your undergraduate school.

Reality Check

Although the economy has yet to fully recover, the hiring market for M.B.a. graduates improved in 2010:

• according to the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), 88 percent of 2010 M.B.a. graduates reported finding work, up from 84 percent in 2009.

• the median salary for M.B.a. graduates increased 5.1 percent to $78,819 when compared to 2009.

• the top three industries of employment for the class of 2010, according to GMAC, are finance/accounting, products/services, and consulting.

• in 2010, the Graduate Management Admission Test was taken 263,979 times, according to GMAC. the exam was taken a record 269,614 times in 2009 and 264,641 times in 2008.

Switzerland has made distinct progress in its combat against money laundering . Yet there are still significant gaps. Switzerland was the trailblazer in the fight against money laundering in the 1990s, but it is now following in midfield. Implementation is still at a high level, but when it comes to the non-banking sector and the reporting of suspect cases, the Swiss Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA) still has considerable shortcomings. The standard is higher in the banking sector precisely because the internationally active banks must conform to more than just the Swiss AMLA.

The international anti-money laundering standard is laid out in the 40 Recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF). These FATF Recommendations list the persons and entities that should be subject to money laundering legislation. in addition to banks and insurance companies, these include a range of other players such as accountants, tax advisers, notaries, lawyers, trust and company service providers, real estate brokers, traders (if substantial cash payments are involved) and casinos.

In Switzerland, dealers in valuable items (e.g. art dealers), real estate agents, tax consultants, as well as investment consultants, trustees, lawyers and notaries  only become subject of the law when they are involved in financial transactions – they escape from the scope when they are in an advisory role only.

Because all major financial centres have adopted a broader scope of application than Switzerland, there is the risk that such players may gravitate towards Switzerland on account of these gaps. This regulatory arbitrage is the booby trap that could mean damaged reputations in the future. It is interesting that the former pariah Liechtenstein has prudently brought the activities of trust companies comprehensively within the scope of anti-money laundering legislation.

This shortcoming in the AMLA is all the more regrettable because Switzerland has made considerable headway in other areas in the fight against money laundering, for example as regards establishing the identity of beneficial owners . Identifying a beneficial owner is a core element of any modern anti-money laundering legislation. The FATF Recommendations require that not only the customer must be identified, but also the person who ultimately owns or controls a customer and/or the person on whose behalf a transaction is being conducted. in the case of legal entities, this verification must include measures to understand the ownership and control structures of the contracting partner. It is not enough in this process merely to rely on customer-supplied information. Such information must also be verified. This conception raises big challenges for contracting parties because they generally have no direct contractual link with the beneficial owner. They depend on the customer (the contracting partner) to provide information on the identity of the determining person who in fact controls the customer.

Switzerland has also been a path-breaker in another aspect of international regulation, namely the “risk-based approach,” which aims to ensure a more targeted and efficient application of anti-money laundering regulations. The higher the risk that the assets involved may have money laundering connections, the more steps the financial intermediary must take to limit that risk. Switzerland introduced the risk-based approach in 2002 for banks, describing in detail the measures that must be taken in high-risk areas. Yet there are still gaps in the non-banking sector in this respect.

The biggest shortcoming in Switzerland’s anti-money laundering strategy is that the reporting requirement in the event of suspected money laundering is not sufficiently fleshed out. The reporting requirement has long been controversial in Switzerland. It was introduced in 1998, ultimately under pressure from the FATF. Yet the Parliament decided to attach unnecessarily high prerequisites to the reporting requirement. The basic principle remains that the transmission of customer data is fundamentally a breach of banking secrecy, and a waiver is only possible when “reasonable suspicion” exists. The reporting threshold in Switzerland is considerably higher than in other centres. This accounts for the rather small number of reported suspected cases, and the FATF criticized Switzerland on that score in its latest country review.
