SEASONED presenter Martin Roberts has had an eventful 25 years in television.
from presenting travel programme wish you Were Here he now co-hosts the UK’s most popular daytime show Homes under The Hammer.
But what many viewers will not know is the property expert is proud to be Warrington born and bred.
Martin said: “I visit regularly as well as doing a lot of filming in the north west for the show and I’ve got no bad memories of Warrington.
“We recently filmed a property which was very close to where I was born, near my old school Appleton Grammar or Bridgewater High as it is now known.
“I saw my old form teacher mr Muscutt who was a big inspiration and taught me how to play guitar.
“He was vey much part of my development so it was lovely to see he’s still teaching.”
Martin’s parents lived in Lower Walton until five years ago when Martin’s mum Margaret died and his dad Norman moved to be closer to Martin in Bath.
both parents had backgrounds in science which led to Martin studying electronics at Bradford University It was there he worked on university and hospital radio stations before he got his first job as a reporter for BBC Radio Merseyside.
following a travel show on Radio Four, he was chosen as one of the presenters for holiday programme wish you Were Here which took him to exotic destinations like Hawaii and Canada.
He said: “You never get any sympathy but the downside was you never got to go for very long.”
But it was Homes under The Hammer that shot him to fame as a housewives’ favourite on the property auction show now in its 14th series, pulling in two million loyal viewers every week day.
Martin, who has a three-year-old son Scot with partner Kirsty, adds: “Even with the ups and downs of the property market it’s still an interesting programme and there is going to be another series after this one.
“We’ll hit 1,000 shows soon but the ones that stick in your mind are where people have followed my advice and it’s gone really well for them.”
Martin has also written a book, making Money from Property, but still has time for his fans.
He said: “I’ll always speak to people because when I was doing hospital radio I remember Keith Chegwin doing an event at Golden Square and talking to me which I really appreciated.”
His advice to those who want a career in the media is to believe you can do it.
Martin said: “Make the most of every opportunity.
“There’s always space for people who are good.”
